Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE)
What is GAE?
A Minimally Invasive Option for Chronic Knee Pain
Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE) is an innovative, image-guided procedure designed to reduce chronic knee pain caused by osteoarthritis and other degenerative joint conditions. For many patients, GAE offers meaningful pain relief without the need for surgery.
How GAE Works
During the procedure, a vascular specialist inserts a thin catheter through a tiny incision—usually in the wrist or groin—and guides it to the genicular arteries, the vessels that supply blood to the lining of the knee. Once in position, microscopic particles are delivered to reduce abnormal blood flow and inflammation in the joint. This targeted approach can help:
- Reduce swelling
- Decrease pain
- Improve mobility
- Delay or avoid knee replacement surgery
Who May Benefit
GAE is most often recommended for individuals with knee osteoarthritis who:
- Have persistent pain despite medications, injections, or physical therapy
- Are not knee replacement surgical candidates or prefer to avoid knee replacement surgery
What to Expect
Your vascular specialist will review your medical history, imaging, and symptoms to determine whether GAE is right for you. If you’re a candidate, the procedure typically takes 1–2 hours, followed by a short observation period. Most patients notice improvement within weeks as inflammation decreases.
