Hemodialysis (HD) Access Creation & Maintenance

At Rex Vascular Specialists, we provide both the creation and maintenance of hemodialysis (HD) access for patients with chronic kidney disease or end-stage renal disease. Whether you are preparing to start dialysis or already receiving treatment, our team is here to ensure you have safe and reliable access.

Most patients are referred to Rex Vascular Specialists by their nephrologist (kidney doctor). During your evaluation, we may perform a vessel mapping duplex ultrasound to determine the most appropriate type of dialysis access. Each decision is made on a case-by-case basis, tailored to your unique needs.

Types of hemodialysis access

Our vascular surgeons specialize in procedures that provide access for dialysis, including:

  • Arteriovenous Fistula (AVF): A surgical connection created using your own blood vessels, considered the preferred option for many patients.
  • Arteriovenous Graft (AVG): A surgical procedure in which a synthetic graft is placed to create reliable access when veins are not suitable for a fistula.

Ongoing Access Care

If you already have dialysis access and are experiencing problems with how it is functioning, our specialists can evaluate and provide treatment to help restore proper flow and maintain long-term access.
